The Power of Girl Gangs

By: Kaitlyn

So far, 2016 has been a year of snail mail, dancing, The Bachelor brackets and most importantly, Girl Gangs.

Growing up, I never really had a strong group of friends that were girls. Although I've always loved women and women-friendships, I only had a couple of girls throughout my childhood that I considered close friends. I've been so blessed for the last 8ish years of my life to meet so many powerful and incredible women who have shown me true support and unconditional love. Through these friendships, I've been able to realize the infinite power that supportive women friendships can have.

For far too long, women have been taught that in order to get ahead or in order to achieve what we want, we have to bring other women down to accomplish it. We've been taught that there's only a certain amount of room for women to succeed and if we let other women get in our way, then that opportunity will be lost for us.

This is a lie that needs to stop poisoning us. The truth is, women can get ahead and succeed when we help others get ahead and succeed. The room for us to achieve our goals is never-ending and supporting each other doesn't get in the way of that. We need to bring everyone in with us.

Because of this, it makes my heart so incredibly happy to see so many ladies (especially via social media) supporting and encouraging one another to success. The women that are part of the groups below have all made a huge impact on my life so far in 2016 and it's only just begun. I can't wait to see what else happens as a result of these incredible collaborations.

The Crybaby Club

Earlier in 2015, our dearest friends Natalie and Mae created their own girl gang for ladies to unite and inspire each other to be tough and tender. Their message to women is one of strength, letting us know that being sensitive and crying does not make us weak; it is our strength. Sarah and I have been so incredibly blessed to be a part of this movement and can't wait to spread this message of empowerment.

The Cheer Up Girls

The Cheer Up Girls were created a few months ago. This girl-gang from Indiana started a movement to send out cards with encouraging messages to anyone that asks for them. Because of our own recent obsession and snail-mail movement, we naturally fell in love. These ladies have so quickly become dear to us and are always full of endless love and joy. You can read more about their story here.

Milwaukee Ladies United

I don't even know where to start on this one. This girl gang popped up on Facebook just a few days ago and has already hit a population of 1,500 ladies from our dear city of Milwaukee.

This group, from the very start, has been one of beautiful support and empowerment of a kind that I have never experienced before. There are probably thousands of posts on the page at the moment, and I honestly have a hard time pulling myself away because I want to read everyone's stories. Everyone's honesty, opening and willingness to love and accept others is truly overwhelming.

In just three days, I've already made numerous new kick-butt lady friends and have planned some exciting adventures. For anyone who has experienced the difficulty of making friends as an adult, this is such a gift.

May the rest of 2016 be a year of women recognizing that kick-ass women supporting other kick-ass women = a gang of kick-ass women taking over the world and making it a better, more supportive and creative place.

Oh, hello!
