June Favorites!

A long time ago in a land far, far away, we used to post a series called Sunday Sweets & Smiles in which we shared our favorite things from the past week.

We decided to start it up again, but on a smaller scale - monthly instead of weekly. Here are our favorite things from June:

Books

Kaitlyn - A House in the Sky by Amanda Lindhout and Sara Corbett
This is a memoir about a young freelance journalist who travels to Somalia with her ex-boyfriend. They end up getting captured and held for ransom. This book is beautifully written with a voice of great forgiveness and a want for survival and understanding.

Sarah - The Martian by Andy Weir
The Martian follows a NASA astronaut, Mark Watney, as he tries to survive being stranded on Mars ... alone. This book is SUPER science-heavy SciFi, which I'm not usually into, but Mark Watney is so hilarious at all the exact right moments that the science isn't overwhelming. Watney pretty much has to go through everything that could go wrong, going wrong. Meanwhile, NASA is trying to figure out how to bring him back to earth. Told in duo narratives, this book weaves together the story of Mark and the story of his crew effortlessly. I recommend this book to everyone. Also, the movie is coming out soon and it looks fantastic, am I right?! Matt Damon, Donald Glover, Kristen Wiig, Jessica Chastain, Kate Mara - this cast is golden.

Movies/Television

Kaitlyn - Jurassic World
Jurassic Park was very much my life growing up. I wanted to be a paleontologist, owned every kind of dinosaur action figure and knew every possible obscure fact there was to know about dinosaurs (I was a really cool kid). So to say that I was looking forward to Jurassic World is an understatement. This movie definitely delivered and it was a perfect execution of what a fun cinematic experience should be like without trying too hard. Now I just want a pet velociraptor (hopefully Chris Pratt can come over and train them for me).

Sarah - FIFA Women's World Cup
Well, Kaitlyn stole my answer, and I can't tell you guys AGAIN that my favorite show is Parks & Recreation, so I'll tell you that I've really been enjoying watching the FIFA Women's World Cup. I grew up playing soccer and still love it. Watching brings back memories of Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain and I generally just enjoy watching women kick ass. This Cup, I think Alex Morgan is my favorite player. USA plays Germany tonight and I am so pumped!

Music
Kaitlyn - Beneath the Skin by Of Monsters and Men
I loved the dreaminess and the fairy-tale-like lyrics of Iceland's OMAM's first album and I was very much looking forward to this one. They maintained their unique voice and it's a perfect album to just lie down and listen to. Organs and Blackwater are two of my favorite tracks.

Sarah - If I Was by The Staves
These three sisters have the most beautiful harmonies of any girl group I've listened to, maybe ever. This album is lovely and haunting and perfect and I found it at the exact right time in my life. I don't want to say much, so just listen.

Beauty/Lifestyle

Kaitlyn - doTerra PastTense Essential Oil
I've suffered from chronic migraines since the second grade and have been looking for an effective solution to combat them ever since. I've tried everything. So when Sarah's mom recommended to try this essential oil, I was totally willing to give it a shot. All you do is rub this essential oil on your forehead, temples and neck and the cooling effect is immediate. I haven't had a migraine in over a week (which is quite amazing) and although I don't know if I can give total credit to this oil, I know that it's helping.

Sarah - Volcano/Sonia
I have two for this category. First, Anthropologie's Capri Blue Volcano candle. I've never known what a volcano smells like, and I'm willing to bet it isn't like this, but this candle is pure heaven in wax form. I've never finished a candle before, but there's a first time for everything, right? Next, I've been loving tinted moisturizers lately. I don't have the best skin, so applying a moisturizer that is also a cover up? Wonderful. I've just begun to dabble in this field and am currently using Sonia Kashuk's Radiant+ Tinted Moisturizer. If you have any suggestions, lay 'em on me.

Food

Kaitlyn - Angie's BOOMCHICKAPOP Popcorn
I was first introduced to BOOMCHICKAPOP because my brother designed their website and showered my family with free samples. I've been obsessed ever since. It's addicting and I can eat a whole bag in one sitting, but it's fine because it's super healthy popcorn. It's only a few calories and it's delicious. Plus, the business was started by two parents in their garage in MN, and what's cuter than that? Try the White Cheddar flavor - it's to die for.

Sarah - Cooking in general?
I've found this month that cooking is a great way to relieve stress. I've made a few dishes of which I've been rather proud. God bless Kaitlyn for eating all my concoctions and telling me she likes them (even if she actually doesn't).

Instagrams/Apps/Other iThings
Kaitlyn- @samandpickles
A Corgi and Rottweiler brother and sister. Need I say more? Also, I'm ALWAYS free to dog-sit...
