Tom Coms

or My Favorite Romantic Comedies Starring Tom Hanks, Who I Love

By: Sarah

I am a self-proclaimed hater of romantic comedies. I'd rather spend my time watching something with some action and adventure and intrigue. Honestly, I'd rather watch all 89 Saw movies before popping in The Notebook. (Sidenote: As I Googled "worst romantic comedies", Google suggested "worst roman emperors" ... which interested me more.) This isn't to say I dislike people who enjoy rom coms, I just do not fall into that category.

I do make an exception, however. If a romantic comedy starring Tom Hanks comes out, you can bet I'm going to be first in line at the theater. Possibly even alone in the theater (I'm looking at you, Larry Crowne).

My love for this man runs deep. I'll see anything he's in and get mad every year he doesn't win the Cecil B. DeMille lifetime achievement award. (George Clooney ... really?!)

One night, as I was perusing my DVD collection, I came upon my Tom Hanks section. Between thinking about how good a hugger he probably is (not in a creepy way, I swear) and laughing that he can sign thank you notes "T.Hanks", an idea came into my head. It went something like this:

"Romantic comedies. Rom coms. Tom Hanks. Tom Hanks in a romantic comedy. Tom Hanks in a rom com. OH MY GOD. TOM COMS. THIS IS MY BEST IDEA EVER."

And thus, Tom Coms was born.

If you've yet to experience the magic that is a Tom Com, I'm here to share three of my favorites with you.
Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan are an unbeatable pair. I don't think they ever dated in real life, but I wish they would have. With a combination of those two, Nora Ephron, Seattle, radio, journalism, meeting atop the Empire State Building and magic, how could you not love this movie? Plus, check out those hair-dos.

Forrest Gump (1994) - Ok, so this isn't traditionally categorized as a rom com. But it's definitely a Tom Com. The relationship between Forrest and Jenny spans over decades. Forrest is the most kind-hearted person and he helps Jenny in every way he can. I mean, come on, he names his freaking boat after her. Watching their relationship, especially toward the end, makes me so emotional. But warning: this movie will make you cry. Hard.

You've Got Mail (1998) - You had to have known this was coming. Because this, arguably, is the best Tom Com there is. Maybe it's the combination of a sweet 90s romance and (again) the duo of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Or maybe it's the fact that it's a story based around books. Maybe it's that we're all rooting for the underdog. Or maybe it's all of these things. This movie fills me with a sense of magic that love can create. It leaves me feeling warm and hopeful. I know I'm acting like a mushy-gushy girl over here, but this movie is everything a rom com should be.

"I wanted it to be you. I wanted it to be you so badly."

Do you have a favorite Tom Com? Can we gush together in the comments?
