T-Time with K & Shannon

In the BookTube community, Shannon Ippolitio, or "cozyteareads" is known for her always happy spirit, huge smile and for her undying love for the one and only Ellen DeGeneres. (If you don't know what Booktube is, it's basically a YouTube community of book lovers, so you should stop what you're doing right now and fall in love with everyone there).

It's easy to excited about just about anything if Shannon talks about it. And this past week, it was impossible not to get insanely excited for a project Shannon is doing to celebrate 5,000 subscribers. To celebrate, Shannon is joining together with The African Library Project to create a library in a secondary school in Seirra Leone.

After I saw her video and her clear passion for making the world a happier place, I knew I wanted to share her story and mission with you. Shannon was kind enough to have a conversation with me about the African Library Project and why it's so important:

How long have you been planning this project? When did you first come up with the idea?
I've been planning it for a couple of months! I knew that I wanted to do it for 5,000 subscribers. That's a huge milestone, one I never thought I would get to so it meant a lot to me. I wanted to do something different, fun and inspiring. My mom actually found the website and I jumped on the idea!

Why do you think that this project is so important? What made you jump on it?

I've wanted to travel to Ghana to volunteer for a long time so when I came across the African Library Project it was something I could do right now. I saw the literacy rate in Sierra Leone and knew I wanted to do all I could to help, it's too low. Reading is such a gift and everyone should have the opportunity to do so.

Yes! I completely agree! Literacy is so important and vital and it's heartbreaking to see just how low literacy rates are in the world. What about reading and books do you think makes them such a gift?

You can travel to a different world and time. I use books as an escape from reality all the time. My life is not half as hard as it could be thinking of the kids in Africa who have nothing and have it so much worse just makes me want to give them to same opportunity.

I love that. What a beautiful thing to give them. How has the response been since you've posted the video?

Unbelievable! I've already received 40 books in the mail and the video has only been up for 5 days! Everyone is so supportive, I knew this community would be the right one the bring this project to!

That's so wonderful!!! Is there anything else you want to say or add that I haven't asked about?

Just thank you!! Thanks so much for helping to spread the word about the library!

No, thank you, dear! I love seeing how people can ban together to do incredible things to help each other out. You're changing the world right here and now. You're changing countless of people's lives. People you've never even met. And that is so beautiful. So thank you.

AH thank you so much! Doing things like this brings so much joy to so many people, it's my pleasure!

Help Shannon create this library. Watch her video below to find out how to send her books and/or make a donation. Every book and contribution counts and matters. Together with her BookTube community and our lovely blogging community, we can make the world a little brighter and make "impossible" dreams become possible for students who could use a little more hope in their lives.
