Classically Minded Watches Netflix

Ah, Netflix. You sure are a wonderful specimen. Recently I found myself feeling sick on a lazy Sunday afternoon. Now, I love me a good book, but sometimes you must escape the world of the written word and look for something a little easier to swallow. Netflix is the best form of medicine… and for those who love to marathon a TV series, it’s quite a drug. Here’s what I’ve been watching:

Angel (2007)
No no, I don’t mean the Buffy spinoff. This period drama features one of my favorite actresses, Romola Garai as the title character. Angel is a young writer with a huge imagination stuck in a life she would never write for herself. So she finds herself an editor (played by Sam Neill) and becomes a famous author. And falls in love with Michael Fassbender. Now you want to watch it, don’t you?

The first half is lighthearted and fun and the second takes a very dark turn. I have warned you. It’s not a movie I would necessarily want to own, but that’s what makes it the perfect candidate for Netflix!

Also, if you haven’t seen Romola Garai in anything before, I would recommend checking out the 2009 Emma adaptation or I Capture the Castle (2003). Angel certainly isn’t one of her most lovable characters, but she truly is a wonderful actress.

Call the Midwife (2012)
If you love Downton Abbey, here is another BBC drama that you can watch (and adore) as you wait for the next tearful season. Jenny Lee (Jessica Raine) plays a young woman starting off in the midwife world in London’s East End during the 1950s. She moves into a nursing convent with quirky and lovable nuns that teach her how to survive in the midwife world.

I found myself cooing over babies and crying over losses in the first episode and that makes a good show for me! They don’t show too much of the details of the births, but there might be a few moments that could make you queasy. However, if I can handle it, so can you. ;) It’s brilliant and truly transports you back into time, stealing your heart while you’re there.

The rest of the time I’ve been guiltlessly marathoning Gossip Girl. :)
