Classically Minded Suggests: How To Marry a Millionaire

If you’re looking for a fun summer romp, look no further than How To Marry a Millionaire (1953). A truly all-star cast (Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable, Lauren Bacall, William Powell) and beautiful imagery makes this classic rom-com one you really don’t want to miss.

The premise: Monroe, Grable and Bacall play three 20-something gold diggers who rent a swanky pad in hopes that it will help them score some rich men.

Obviously I chose this to give you a glimpse into my day-to-day life. I frequently get a personal fashion show to pick out my clothes, and yes, I do live in a beautiful penthouse with a rooftop terrace. It’s a pretty typical way to live. As Marilyn says, “People who live any other way are just CRAZY!”

Reasons to watch:

  1. Lauren Bacall as Schatze Page. My absolute favorite line is when she says, “I’ve always like older men… Look at that old fellow what’s-his-name in The African Queen. Absolutely crazy about him.” She’s talking about her real-life hubby, Humphrey Bogart!

  2. Marilyn Monroe worrying about how “men aren’t attentive to girls who wear glasses.” Praise the Lord that isn’t true anymore! ;)

  3. William Powell because… William Powell. Sigh.

  4. People saying phrases like, “I think it’s just creamy!” and “Is this on the level?” We need to say more phrases like that.

I think you guys will really love this movie. It’s one of my favorites!
