Classically Minded: The Original Leading Men in My Life

For me, a movie goes from great to amazing if there is a quality leading man in it. I don’t just mean a good-looking one, I mean a great personality and prime acting skills. The classics taught me what a leading man ought to be and these five actors were the first true “leading men” for me.

1. Cary Grant (aka Archibald Leach)

I first saw Cary in An Affair to Remember, and as you know that remains one of my favorite movies today. He’s suave, comical, handsome, serious… The wide variety of films he made astounds me, and I love the fact that it seems there are always more of his movies for me to see. His voice makes my knees buckle. :)

Some of my faves: Notorious, Arsenic and Old Lace, An Affair To Remember, The Bachelor and the Bobby-Soxer

2. Jimmy Stewart

Speaking of voices, Jimmy Stewart has a voice that is unmistakable and irreplaceable. I always loved how he seemed like such a normal guy on the screen; I think he would have been fun to get to know in real life. My fiancé wooed me by doing his best George Bailey impression a little after we started dating. I knew it was true love right then and there!

Some of my faves: The Shop Around the Corner, Ziegfeld Girl, Rear Window, The Man Who Knew Too Much, It’s A Wonderful Life!

3. Rock Hudson

Rock was always my favorite opposite Doris Day. Her sugary sweetness was matched perfectly with his towering figure and charm. The day I found out he didn’t swing my way was the saddest day of my life. My poor middle school heart realized it would never work out.

Some of my faves: All That Heaven Allows, Pillow Talk, Lover Come Back, Send Me No Flowers

4. Tony Randall

I always liked the funny guys. Tony Randall had a boyish charm and a smirk that could just kill me. I always rooted for him when I wasn’t supposed to and felt bad that he got the shaft in the romance department. To me, he was classy AND funny. The double whammy!

Some of my faves: Pillow Talk, Lover Come Back, Boys’ Night Out, Send Me No Flowers, Down With Love

5. Dick Van Dyke

Another funny guy. When I was telling my mom about the list for this blog she said, “You know why you like Dick Van Dyke? He’s just like Brian! He even looks like him!” It’s true. My fiancé has a lot of similarities to Dick Van Dyke. I’m not complaining. He makes me laugh and swoon all the time!

Some of my faves: Bye Bye Birdie, Mary Poppins, The Dick Van Dyke Show, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

Well, there you have it! Stay tuned for my leading ladies next week!

Love,
Allie
