Happy Galentine's Day!

by: Sarah and Kaitlyn

Pink is everywhere. No matter what store you go into, it looks like a giant threw up Petpo Bismol on all of the merchandise. Everyone’s getting excited for candy hearts, red roses and cheesy cards. Valentine’s Day is so romantic!

But let us propose another romantic holiday to celebrate on February 13th, Galentine’s Day. Okay, okay, so we didn’t make it up. It was created by the ever-galentinesday

inspiring Leslie Knope on Parks and Recreation.

It’s a day dedicated to all of your lady friends in order to celebrate their accomplishments and independence, because who needs a man anyway?! It is all about women celebrating the other amazing women in their lives and proclaiming why they love them so much. And what is more perfect and more necessary than that? Instead of spending a night with a significant other who overrides you with clichéd compliments, spend it with your ladies who appreciate everything that you are. Let’s face it, the true significant others of your life are your closest girlfriends.

Who can you tell that your boyfriend has this disgusting habit of chewing his food with his mouth open? Your gals.

Who can you always rely on to tell you you’ve got chocolate cake stuck in your teeth or your skirt tucked into your panties? Your gals.

Who can you let loose in front of (ie burping, wearing sweatpants, eating a whole bag of Doritos and not worrying about your breath)? Your gals. (This isn’t to say you couldn’t do this in front of your man, but it depends on the man. And the woman.)

And most importantly, who can you know will always have your back? And your front? And sides and every part of you? Your gals.

Here’s to a night much more exciting than a chick flick, cheap wine, heart-shaped chocolates and wanna-be-fancy-food. (After all, Ann Perkins wouldn’t appreciate the un-anatomically correct hearts anyway)

Here are all the essentials you will need to have the perfect Galentine’s Day:

1. A buffet of breakfast foods, primarily featuring waffles.

2. Handwritten letters to every one of your gals, telling them how awesome they are.

3. Homemade Galentine’s Day cards featuring powerful women that inspire you. (Examples: Michelle Obama, Hilary Clinton, Tina Fey, Ellen DeGeneres, Beyoncé, Oprah, etc.)

4. DVDs of your favorite television shows and movies. We recommend Parks & Rec, Girls and Bridesmaids.

5. Wine. Preferably pink moscato.

6. Anatomically correct heart-shaped candy.

7. Games! If you can find an old version of Pretty Pretty Princess, Girl Talk or Mall Madness, make sure to pack it.

8. Flowers. Who says only men can give flowers? This is Galentine’s Day.

9. A Duke Silver record.

10. A camera to document the night. Which you will then upload to Facebook and encourage others to try out Galentine’s Day and then it will sweep the nation and by 2014 Valentine’s Day will be obsolete. (Sorry, men.)

So, here’s to Galentine’s Day and women everywhere. Let’s celebrate us.
